FOLLOWING her breakout performance in the JJ Abrams-directed, Steven Spielberg-produced Super 8, Elle Fanning‘s star power is on the rise.
Reports have her joining Angelina Jolie in Sleeping Beauty retellingMaleficent, due out in 2013.
Following in the footsteps of Broadway blockbuster Wicked – where we see things from the wicked witch’s point of view – Maleficent will also tell the Disney tale from the antagonist’s perspective.
With those evil shoes filled by Jolie, and effects guru Robert Stromberg (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Golden Compass) set to direct, the younger Fanning sister may be rounding out the cast of leading ladies playing, of course, Sleeping Beauty.
The pursuit of Elle to play Princess Aurora should come as no surprise, given that she is already scoring roles in front of filmmaking greats like Abrams, Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola (Twixt).
Also welcome is the infusion of fresh young talent in a part originally written as a 16-year-old princess, as opposed to other fairy tale retellings – Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman – where the damsel is depicted as an adult.
